Research Seminar: "Participation and Primary Health Care in Humanitarian Settings"

The McGill Department of Family Medicine presents “Participation and Primary Health Care in Humanitarian Settings” by Christina Zarowsky MD PhD and Loubna Belaid PhD. 

Christina Zarowsky is a physician-anthropologist, currently director of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health at the University of Montreal. Loubna Belaid is an anthropologist and PRAM post-doctoral fellow focussing on reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health in post-conflict settings. One concern in post-conflict and other humanitarian settings is the lack or distortion of support structures usually available as resources for primary health care. Families are often fragmented, women are often alone with their children, and livelihoods are almost always very precarious. This undercuts the usual organisational basis of family medicine and calls for new modalities of primary health care. Humanitarian settings also offer unprecedented opportunities for transformational shifts in delivery of health services, as decolonising and culturally safe approaches can be introduced, and their impact proved.
