Teaching Assistantship

A Teaching Assistant (TA) is a graduate student appointed to assist a Course Instructor with the teaching and evaluation of students in a course. A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Instructor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course.



All those hired as Teaching Assistant's at McGill University are required to be a member of the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM) - McGill's Teaching Union. For further information about membership and governance please visit the AGSEM website.

TA Collective Agreement



All Teaching Assistant positions are posted on and applied to through Workday on McGill’s Careers Website.

If you are a current employee at McGill, with an active appointment in Workday who has successfully logged into Workday with an account, you must apply as a Current employee. You must be signed into VPN using your email account prior to logging into Workday in order to be able to apply.

If you are not a current employee, you must apply as an External candidate.  When you click on "apply" for a position of interest, you will then be prompted to sign into Workday. At this point, you must create an account with the use of a personal email address exclusively (i.e.,, etc). Do not create an account using your address at this time, as this is currently causing a technical issue.

Please note that KPE graduate students will receive an email from the KPE Graduate Student Listserv notifying them when positions are posted for fall and winter.

TA positions are posted on Workday twice/year by the following dates:

Deadlines to Apply

Fall May 31st (KPE postings will go up on April 30) 15 working days after posting date
Winter November 1st (KPE postings will go up on October 18) 15 working days after posting date
Summer March 31st KPE does not offer teaching assistantships for summer courses

All applications must be submitted online through McGill’s Careers Website. Please be sure to review the qualifications BEFORE electing to apply.

If you are interested in more than one position, please remember you must:

  • Apply to each position individually.
  • Please feel free to upload your CV in your application, which is often helpful for the instructor of the course.

Submission Dates

AGSEM Union Membership Form [.pdf] The AGSEM - Teaching Assistants membership form must be completed and returned directly to AGSEM - Teaching Assistants: mail [at] (Email) To be submitted at the same time the contract is accepted in Workday.
TA Workload Form [.pdf] Complete with the Course Instructor and submit to KPE office by the course add/drop deadline.

The Course Supervisor and Teaching Assistant must meet within 2 weeks of midterm to review the objectives and make appropriate revisions as required
Fall Semester TA Workload Form DUE on thefall semester course add/drop deadline at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in October, see below)

Fall Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: 3rdFriday in October(TAs and instructor review their original Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

Winter Semester TA Workload Form DUE on the winter semester course add/drop deadline at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in February, see below)

Winter Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: 3rd Friday in February at 5:00PM (TAs and instructor review their original Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

Winter Semester DEADLINE is 3rd Friday in April at 5:00PM
Please note that all of the forms above must be completed and signed by the instructor and teaching assistant before submitting.

Workload and Performance Evaluation Forms should be submitted to the KPE's Administrative & Student Affairs Coordinator, Sonia Masi via studentaffairs.kpe [at] (Email) or in hardcopy form at Currie Gymnasium, Room 216.




What is the hourly rate for TAs?

Rates of Pay as of:

  • First Sunday of August 2021: $32.38
  • First Sunday of August 2022: $33.03

Vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday compensation (3.6%) is included.

When will I be notified if I am offered a position?

Approximately 35 days from the application deadline. Please note only selected applicants will be contacted. A notice of offer will be sent to all selected applicants via their Workday profile.

Can I hold multiple Teaching Assistantships?

Yes. As long as the total combined hours for all TAships does not exceed 180 hours in one semester.

Will I have to attend the course lectures?

A majority of the positions will require class attendance. If you have been offered a teaching assistantship, please check with the instructor whether this will be a requirement, and if so, please verify that you are available during class hours before accepting a position.
