The use of incretin-based drugs is not associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

The research was conducted by the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES), which used the health records of almost 1 million patients with types 2 diabetes.

A distinguished McGill alumnus, Victor Goldbloom, died Monday night at age 92.

A pediatrician by academic training, Goldbloom graduated from McGill with a BSc in 1944, an MD in 1945 and a DipEd in 1950. In 1992, McGill presented him with an honorary degree in recognition of his many years of service to Montreal, Quebec and Canadian society.

McGill University announced today a new name and vision that will position the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning at the forefront of simulated training in the health sciences. Thanks to a $7.5 million gift from Arnold and Blema Steinberg, the Centre will be expanding its facilities, enhancing its technologies and broadening its scope of activities.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, McGill University, the Université de Montréal and the Fondation du Dr Julien will establish two chairs in social pediatrics in the community, to be based in the Montreal neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. In a Canadian first, researchers will conduct a long-term study on social pediatrics in the community.  This clinical practice has a proven track record, thanks to its founder, Dr. Gilles Julien, who has been practicing social pediatrics in disadvantaged neighbourhoods for nearly 30 years.

McGill University’s board of governors has adopted a resolution demanding the Quebec government withdraw the cuts it is imposing on universities and restore the funding that was in place, saying the government’s action is “excessive and injurious” to the university.

Principal Heather Munroe-Blum has sent a message to the McGill community saying the university will take every measure possible to persuade the government “to withdraw these harmful and ill-timed cuts.”
