On November 18, the 39th Annual Departmental Awards Night, hosted by the McGill Psychiatry Residents’ Association, took place. Held at Thomson House, it was a great night filled with residents, site coordinators and faculty who celebrated nominees and winners with honor, and some laughter, too! We wish to congratulate all nominees and recipients and thank all presenters and attendees. It was a great evening spent in wonderful company! Hoping to see you next year!

The federal government’s deficit for the 2023-2024 fiscal year that ended in March 2024 was announced Monday. It was $61.9 billion, significantly higher than the $40.1 billion deficit that had been promised.

In her announcement, she cited differences with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over economic policy and responses to American economic nationalism, and said the prime minister had told her that he no longer wanted her to remain Minister of Finance.

A novel drug holds promise for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic disorder that causes severe muscle degeneration.

McGill University researchers have discovered that an experimental compound called K884 can boost the natural repair abilities of muscle stem cells. Current treatments can slow muscle damage, but don’t address the root problem.

DMD affects about one in 5,000 boys worldwide, often leading to wheelchair dependence by the teenage years and life-threatening complications in early adulthood.
