Evolution of Canadian agriculture and need for sustainable solutions

Published: 19 March 2025

In the Hill Times, Saji George, Associate Professor in McGill University's Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry, argues that with the right investments in research, innovation, and farmer education, Canada can lead the global transition toward a more sustainable and resilient agricultural future.

Canadian agriculture has evolved into a highly efficient, technologically advanced, and globally competitive sector, thanks to technological progress, policy support, and evolving market demands. However, as climate change ramps up, the agricultural sector faces increasing pressure to adopt cleaner and more sustainable solutions.

Shifting to a circular bioeconomy, including adopting bio-based agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, is essential. As leader of a research group addressing the technical challenges associated with this transition through nanotechnology and biotechnology, Professor George makes the case for stronger government and industry support programs to pave the way for widespread adoption of sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.
