FAQs

GRE appears on my checklist, do I need to provide GRE scores?

GRE is optional, not mandatory. Once all other application documents are received, your checklist will appear as complete.

My TOEFL score is just below the ECE Departmental minimum admission requirement. Will my application be automatically refused?

Your application will be evaluated. There are many factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications for admission. It is however recommended to meet minimum admission requirements.

How do I send my IELTS/TOEFL scores?

IELTS and TOEFL scores must be sent electronically to McGill by your test centre. You must therefore contact the test centre to make the arrangments.

If the language of instruction at my University was in English, do I need to write the TOEFL?

If you completed a degree (Bachelor or Master's) in English, you are not required to provide proof of English competency in the form of TOEFL, IELTS etc. You are required to provide official proof (either stated on your transcript or in a separate letter from the University) that the language of instruction for your degree was English.

Is it mandatory to find a supervisor before applying for admission?

No, you may email potential supervisors (see Research Areas) if you wish, but it is not required.

Can I email my CV, transcripts and test scores to the ECE Graduate Programs Office to find out if I am eligible to apply to their graduate program?

It is not the policy of the ECE Graduate Programs Office to pre-screen applicants. The information published on our Admissions website, outlines the minimum admission requirements to aid applicants in coming to an informed decision on whether applying is the appropriate choice for them.

What sort of funding is available to graduate students? How do I apply for funding?

Funding for graduate students is available from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering and the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office.

Applicants to Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate programs are automatically considered for Graduate Assistantships offered by the Department and entrance awards offered by the Faculty of Engineering. No additional application form is required.

All current and prospective students are encouraged to apply for external funding.

Can I still apply if I don't meet minimum admission requirements?

Applicants should meet minimum requirements. Admission is very competitive and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Should I apply for thesis or non-thesis?

The two Master's degrees offered by our department differ in terms of their content. The MSc thesis option typically involves a fair amount of research work (summarized in a thesis); the MEng non-thesis option is more course-oriented (27 courses credits vs. 18 course credits in the thesis option) and has a smaller research component ("project"). You must for both degrees pick an Area of Research; you will be assigned a supervisor in this area.

Can I apply for more than one program?

Yes, you may apply for more than one program (maximum 2 per on-line application). If you are offered admission to more than one program, you may accept only one offer.

How do I convert my percentage grades to a CGPA on a scale out of 4.0?

Information can be found on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office International Degree Equivalencies webpage.
