First impressions of the McGill MBA

Published: 17 October 2011

McGill was rated as the number one university in Canada by QS. I am very happy to hear that because I am studying at McGill for my MBA. Since my arrival here on campus in August, I have been more than impressed by the services and the facilities here.

When I first arrived at the lobby, I was greeted by a very nice "Desautels School of Management" sign. The sign looks nice, but what was more impressive was the space and environment designed for students to study and discuss. The MBA students here get access to the MBA computer labs, lounges, conference rooms, meeting rooms, all with extra comfortable chairs. Having been in Japan for nine years, where typical single apartments are 15 square meters, being in the Bronfman building is basically like being in a castle for me.

Certainly, I am convinced that there are good reasons behind the QS ratings and am very encouraged by it. However, as Zoe Yujnovich, CEO and President of Iron Ore Company of Canada, has said when she came to talk to our class, we need to maintain a track record in order to maintain our job. An MBA might help us get our foot in a door, but how we perform later on is going to matter more...

Boon Hoh is a 2012 MBA candidate at McGill University. She completed her first year in the  McGill Japan  program while she worked as an events project manager. She has worked with the governments of over ten different countries and traveled to over thirty countries. When not studying for her classes, she likes to study exchange rates of JPY/EUR to determine the factors that cause the changes. After graduation, Boon wishes to find work in marketing.
