A Teaching Assistant is a graduate student appointed to assist a Course Supervisor with the instruction and evaluation of students in a course. A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Supervisor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their own course schedule does not conflict with the teaching assistantship position they apply for.
NOTE: The department may not be able to fill all the positions advertised. Announcements are considered tentative, pending final determination of course offerings and subject to sufficient enrollment.
Teaching Assistantship Forms
If you are accepted for a TA position, you must complete the following forms and return them with your signed offer letter by email to graduate.sociology [at] mcgill.ca, or in person to the Student Affairs located in Leacock Building, room 712.
Personal Data Form (for new TAs only)
You must also complete the TA Workload Form, before the end of the add/drop period, with your assigned Professor and submit it to the Administrative Service Centre, Student Affairs, located in Leacock Building, room 712.

Becoming a TA / Finding a TAship
Teaching assistantships vary from year to year. Information about available Teaching Assistantship positions is shared primarily in three ways:
- Department email to all graduate students
- Posting via Department website (see above)
- Posting on the CaPS website, which also lists summer and part-time research positions
Available positions for the Fall Term are posted in early May, and positions for the Winter Term are posted in October. Applications for these positions are usually due within a month of their posting.
AGSEM: McGill's Teaching Union
As a Teaching Assistant you automatically become a member of AGSEM, McGill's Teaching Union. AGSEM also represents exam invigilators, course lecturers and instructors. Visit the AGSEM website for more information.
SKILLSETS Teaching Resources
SKILLSETS is a centrally-managed program jointly hosted by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and McGill's Teaching and Learning Services. They develop and promote interdisciplinary professional development offerings for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
