In a new published article, Maike Isaac (PhD candidate) and Prof. Jennifer Elrick assess how COVID-19 can prompt a revaluation of the legal statuses of “essential” migrant workers

Published: 24 November 2020

In "How COVID-19 May Alleviate the Multiple Marginalization of Racialized Migrant Workers" (published in Ethnic and Racial Studies) Maike Isaac and Prof. Jennifer Elrick assess the potential impact of COVID-19 on the precarious legal statuses of “essential” migrant workers in countries of the Global North. The article discusses two frames of deservingness  – based on work and based on sacrifice – as having the potential to facilitate claims for improved legal status. This publication is part of an ongoing research project entitled "Changing the Social Value of Work? The Effects of Covid-19 on Canada's Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP)." The project is funded by the McGill University COVID-19 Rapid Response Social Sciences and Humanities Award & MI4 Emergency COVID-19 Research Funding (ECRF).
