President:adam.baron [at] mail.mcgill.ca ( Adam Baron)Adam, CLAMSC Past President

Adam’s passion for learning started at a young age and has since taken him all over Canada. Born and raised in a small farming community in central Alberta, he moved to Nova Scotia after high school graduation to pursue a Bachelor of Music (Class of 2007) at Acadia University. Following a move to Ontario, he graduated in 2008 from the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Windsor. In addition to his two degrees, Adam has spent summers in Montreal, Chicoutimi, and Trois-Pistoles, QC studying and improving his French.

Adam moved to Montreal in September 2008 as a music and piano teacher, before deciding to enroll in the MLIS program in September 2009. While he has many diverse interests in the LIS field, Adam is most interested in cataloguing, folksonomies, and controlled vocabularies. As President of the CLASC, Adam hopes to provide plenty of opportunities for SIS students to: interact with one another and future colleagues, explore the diverse LIS field, and further their knowledge of topics affecting the profession.

        benjamin.girard-bond [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Benjamin Girard-Bond)

After living in Montréal for 19 years, Benjamin decided to move to our southern neighbour to study chemistry at the university where Facebook was born. His passion for chemistry quickly morphed into an interest in environmental policy, but the real epiphany came when he discovered the field of linguistics, at which point he changed his major. He eventually went on to pursue a Ph.D. in linguistics at a rural university in Connecticut, only to realize a year later that in a “publish or perish” environment, he would most likely perish. That’s when he moved back to his hometown and entered McGill University to pursue an MLIS degree. He is hoping it will be his last.

Benjamin’s interests include pretty much everything. To name a few: crossword puzzlery, French postmodern theory, long walks on the beach, exposing the hidden workings of the patriarchy, prepositions and postpositions, superstrings, treasure hunts, activism, praising Wikipedia, and Martha Stewart Living.

External Liaison Officer -- David Macaulay

        Secretary:
        salut_anne_fre [at] hotmail.com (Anne-Frédérique Champoux)

Anne, aka “The Girl from Quebec City”, first studied literature at Laval University, completing both BA and MA there. She fell in love with librarianship when she was hired as a summer student at the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec. Quickly and unpredictably, she became the manager of a charming Victorian library, dating back to 1868. From then on, she decided to become a librarian. She is now in her first year of the librarianship stream at McGill.

Anne is an active gal who is incapable of staying at home doing nothing. As she can hardly stay in place, she enjoys traveling and discovering new places (like Lithuania, India or Connecticut). An amateur actress, she loves theatre… and oral presentations. She is a beginner knitter, is addicted to chocolate-covered ginger, and dreams of “becoming a domestic goddess.”

        Treasurer and Communication Officer:
        nan.zhang2 [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Nan Zhang)

Nan ZHANG hails from Beijing, China, the mysterious ancient land. She is currently a first year MLISer in Knowledge Management and is fond of librarianship. She is interested in Business or Finance Librarianship due to the past study experience in double undergraduate major of English and Finance, and the admiration for the course: Business Information in this term and its instructor.

After completed her undergraduate study in Beijing Foreign Study University in 2005, Nan has been working for the Embassy of Vanuatu to China as a Secretary for nearly three years. One day, she read an article to introduce knowledge management theory and realized that what she had been doing all day was called knowledge management, or business librarian, or business information specialist.(And there is no KM courses or related degrees provided in any universities in China.) Therefore, to figure out what the real business librarian is and what knowledge management is about, Nan decided to study information study in Canada and hope to find the answer here. And she enjoy all the technology stuffs, like Photoshop and Access, and is willing to learn anything new related the IT aspects of librarianship.

Apart from school life,Nan is now trying to find a proper and fast way to learn French. Regarding her favorite sports, Nan is a big swimming lover and her current goal is to crawl stroke 5000 meters.

The role in CLA is to take care of everything related the money.

Image of Janelle, the CLAMSC president for 2008-2009 President: nell.ramsay [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Janelle Ramsay)

Janelle grew up in the Rocky Mountains -- on the south side of the border! After several years as an elementary educator (in Colorado), she is looking forward to her second year of her studies in the librarianship specialization at SIS.

Her interests include public libraries, information literacy, Web 2.0, reading, eating chocolate chip cookies, and enjoying the great outdoors. As president of CLAMSC, she is looking forward to providing multiple opportunities for students to explore the profession, further their knowledge of hot topics in the field, and improve their overall SIS experience.

        image of grahamExternal Liaison Officer:
        graham.lavender [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Graham Lavender)

Graham is a confirmed city slicker, having grown up in Toronto, completed his undergraduate degree at UBC in Vancouver, and only twice left the continent, both times to visit Paris. He now lives happily in downtown Montreal, sandwiched between skyscrapers and what is considered a mountain by Eastern Canadian standards.

Believe it or not, Graham decided to attend library school after seeing a t-shirt that made a joke about library science. Now in his second year of the librarianship stream, his interests include web 2.0/library 2.0, information literacy, and academic libraries. He has worked in the SIS IT lab and currently has a job with McGill Library Technology Services, researching the use of different innovations in academic libraries around the world. Outside of school, he spends his time taking photos and shamelessly promoting his blog, which is called The Inspired Library School Student and discusses issues of interest to other students, with the goal of making people excited about the LIS field.

Treasurer: aude.mcdermott [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Aude McDermott)

Aude is from the Eastern Townships. She has been living in Montreal for the past 9 years, and has a B.Sc. in biology, minor in archaeology, from McGill University and a post-secondary teaching certificate from the UQAM.

After haunting public libraries for the past few years, Aude decided to make a career out of it. She is in the librarianship stream with an interest in public and school libraries. Her other interests include swimming, downhill ski, great food, and an addiction to novels.

Image of Brittany, the secretary of the CLA Secretary:
        brittany.trafford [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Brittany Trafford)

Brittany is currently in her first year of the MLIS program. She recently finished her undergraduate degree at Mount Allison University where she studied both English Literature and International Relations. She is studying in the librarianship stream and hopes to work for an academic library; however, she is also open to exploring the many other opportunities offered in this field!

Born and raised in a small town in New Brunswick, Brittany is a true Maritimer. Her interests and hobbies include; reading, skiing, going to the gym, baking and trying desperately to improve her French! She is looking forward to an exciting year in Montreal and is pleased to be a part of the McGill Student Chapter of the CLA!

image of rosanne, the cla's webmaster Communications Officer:
        rosanne.lester [at] mail.mcgill.ca (Rosanne Lester)

Rosanne is from the land of North America's largest shopping mall: Edmonton, Alberta. Along with an unerring sense of direction in large buildings, she comes to McGill with a combined honors B.A. from the University of Alberta, in early Canadian art history and palaeopathology (and yes, she is aware they don't exactly go together).

Currently in her second year of the MLIS program, Rosanne's primary interests are in art and health sciences libraries. She hopes to be able to use her knowledge from at least one of her specializations from her undergraduate degree in her professional career. She also enjoys web design and the IT aspects of librarianship. Rosanne has decided that her new goal (starting next year...) is to learn how to say "no," as she has somehow managed to become the webmaster for 4 of the 5 SIS student groups.

Outside of school, Rosanne's favourite thing to do is horseback ride. She has also recently taken up scrapbooking which has, in turn, pretty much taken over her life (and her bank account, that stuff is expensive!).

Jill Boruff is in the second year of her masters in Library and Information Studies at McGill and is the co-president of the CLA McGill Student Chapter (CLAMSC). Her interests focus on public libraries, children's services, and reference work. Jill grew up in Indiana and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in English Literature and French Literature. After working in university administration for a few years, she finally discovered her true calling as a librarian.

Genevieve Hillsburg's passion for reading led her to complete two philosophy degrees and to accumulate hefty late fines from the library. Now she finds herself in information studies at McGill, putting her love of reading, and her fascination with locating answers to questions, to good use. She hopes to someday be gainfully and meaningfully employed as a librarian.

        Vice-President:
        Kirsten Huhn

        Secretary/Treasurer:
        Nikki Tummon

        External Liason Officer:
Katharine Barrette grew up with weekly library visits, later spending hours in the reference sections of Montréal cegep and university libraries while Mom worked on her library technologies homework. She studied English Literature and Creative Writing as an undergraduate and waited for the Great Canadian Novel to pour forth from her teeming mind. Somewhere along the lines she lost her way and worked in engineering administration, commercial finance, retail book sales, publishing and technical writing/editing. Katharine has finally found her way back to libraries and embraces reference work with a perhaps excessive passion. She can often be found in either Government Information at McGill or doing general chat reference work at another major Montréal university.

        Communications Officer:
Melanie Sucha is the communications officer for the McGill University Student Chapter. She is in her second year of studies in the Master of Library and Information Studies program. Melanie has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Calgary.

Melanie spent the summer of 2006 working in a federal government library, at the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP. She has also held positions at the University of Calgary Health Sciences Library, the Calgary Public Library and the William Aberhart High School Library in Calgary. She has been a fan of reading and libraries as far back as she can remember.

        Vice-President: (fall term)
Jacqueline Barlow, a Manitoba girl, comes to the MLIS program after 2 years' absence from academia. She has a B.A. Hons. in philosophy from the University of Winnipeg, which she obtained while reading everything that wasn't on the list. After living in Winnipeg and Toronto and working as a temp, a waitress, a bookstore clerk and a market researcher, she is totally psyched about Librarianship and Montreal. Seriously, just ask.
