We are excited at the prospect of a dedicated facility for the Sylvan Adams Sport Science Institute (SASSI) within the upper quadrant of McGill University's downtown campus. Faculty of Education and SASSI leadership are working with architects and other professionals to conceptualize contemporary spaces that will be ideal for a research hub, housing cutting-edge equipment, facilitating collaboration, and hosting academic events. Currently, the academic and student members of the Insitute are conducting their research within the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education sector of Sir Arthur Currie Memorial Gymnasium, which is also home to McGill Athletics.
From a swimming flume to an instrumented 30-m runway, plans are underway for SASSI to have the highest quality sports research equipment to compliment its anticipated 1300+ square feet of meeting, conference, and interview rooms.
The SASSI research facility is currently under construction. The institute will consist of 32,000 sqft of laboratory, training, meeting, and office spaces for conducting a variety of sport science research.
Laboratories
The largest of our lab spaces will be dedicated to the three sports of triathlon: Swimming, Cycling, and Running. Other labs will include Body Composition and Function, Instrumented 30-m Runway, Metabolic Kitchen, and Medical Wet Lab. Our general lab space will also house equipment for research on neurostimulation and locomotion.
Meeting and Interview Rooms
The institute will contain several meeting and conference rooms to host regular public events to share our research, collaborate with other experts, and discuss science and sport with coaches, athletes, and support staff. In addition, interview rooms for our sports psychology experts will allow for analysis of human interaction between members of teams or athletic staff.
Training and Recovery
In addition to our laboratories, SASSI McGill will also have spaces dedicated to training and recovery intervention studies. The institute will include a metabolic kitchen, a strength and conditioning gym, running and cycling training spaces, and recovery baths (hot and cold) to conduct diverse interventions for optimal recovery after training.
Offices
Our 2800 sqft of office spaces will allow for our full members to conduct research at SASSI with all of their trainees. We will also be able to host our visiting researchers, and make them feel at home at SASSI.
