Message from the Director
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at McGill University stands at the intersection of surgical excellence, scientific discovery, and transformative education. Our vision is to be a global leader in reconstructive surgery—advancing innovative care, generating impactful knowledge, and training the next generation of surgical leaders.
Spanning McGill’s core teaching hospitals—including the Royal Victoria Hospital (Glen site), the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, and the Lakeshore General Hospital—as well as dedicated aesthetic surgery clinics, our division delivers high-volume, high-complexity care across the full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery. This integrated academic ecosystem enables us to address some of the most challenging reconstructive problems through coordinated, multidisciplinary expertise.
Dr. Joshua Vorstenbosch
Director, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
“At McGill, we are not only advancing the field of plastic surgery—
we are helping to define its future.”

A Platform for Transformative Clinical Care
|
Our clinical mission is grounded in delivering exceptional outcomes for patients with complex reconstructive needs. From microsurgical breast reconstruction and limb preservation to craniofacial surgery, peripheral nerve reconstruction, and lymphedema treatment, our division provides comprehensive, subspecialized care across all domains of the specialty.
As a high-volume referral centre, we are uniquely positioned to cultivate deep expertise, refine advanced surgical techniques, and define best practices that shape care at both national and international levels.

Driving Innovation Through Research
|
We are advancing a research program that is redefining the biological and technological foundations of reconstructive surgery. Our faculty lead innovative work in biomaterials and implant science, mechanobiology, regenerative medicine, nerve regeneration, and health systems optimization.
Through strategic collaboration with engineers, scientists, and institutional research platforms at McGill, we have created a truly translational environment—one in which discovery and clinical care are tightly integrated. Our goal is not only to better understand healing and disease, but to actively shape the future of surgical care through meaningful innovation.

Educating Future Leaders
|
Education is central to our identity and our responsibility as an academic division. We are committed to training surgeons who are not only technically exceptional, but also thoughtful, innovative, and adaptable leaders in a rapidly evolving field.
Our training programs are distinguished by high clinical volumes, broad subspecialty exposure, structured mentorship, and a strong culture of academic inquiry. Our graduates consistently pursue competitive fellowships and leadership roles across Canada and internationally, extending the impact of McGill far beyond our institution.
|
Looking ahead, our ambition is clear: to build a division that sets the standard for excellence in reconstructive surgery—where clinical care, research, and education are seamlessly integrated, and where innovation is driven by a singular focus on improving patients’ lives.
This vision is made possible by the strength of our people—our faculty, trainees, and interdisciplinary partners—whose collective expertise, dedication, and integrity define who we are.
At McGill, we are not only advancing the field of plastic surgery—we are helping to define its future.
"Our vision is to be a global leader in reconstructive surgery—advancing innovative care, generating impactful knowledge, and training the next generation of surgical leaders."
