Based in Bamako, Mali, this site is hosted by Yambo Ouologuem University and coordinated by Fatoumata Keita with a team of 15 students, including Abdoulaye Abou Coulibaly and Boureima H. Toure. The broader TRANSFORM group also includes Dr Moriké Dembélé, Dr Binta Koita, Dr Kadidia Koné, Dr Bahaba Coulibaly, and doctoral student Youssouf Sinayoko. In 2024, the team produced photovoice projects for the Local Youth Gatherings that were later selected for a traveling exhibition. They have also taken part in the International McGill Cellphilm Festival on several occasions.

Intergenerational Forum

As part of TRANSFORM, Mali hosted a virtual forum that explored intergenerational dialogue on gender norms through Young Malians’ Photovoice work. The discussion centered on three themes:

  • Positive masculinity and deconstructing gender stereotypes
  • Creating safe and inclusive study and work environments
  • Capacity building, youth leadership, and social change

Youth United Exhibition: Initial Photovoice Submissions 2024

As part of the first TRANSFORM Summit, Local Youth Gatherings were held across several sites, where young people used photovoice to explore gender issues in their lives and communities. The photos from the Mali fieldsite show the themes and experiences that youth documented during this process. They contributed to a broader exhibition that brought together images from all participating sites and continued to evolve as pieces travelled back to each community and circulated digitally.
