MUHC - The Royal Victoria Hospital at the Glen Site

Location

1001 Decarie Boulevard, Montréal, Québec, H4A 3J

Service Description

The Glen Site Supportive and Palliative Care Services include a 12-bed in-patient palliative care unit, a consultation service, and an out-patient day hospital.

The Balfour Mount Palliative Care Unit

Located at the Glen Site but serving all MUHC patients, the palliative care unit offers holistic care through an interdisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, psychologists, a social worker, music therapist, spiritual care worker and a host of other allied health professionals.  Together the team provides expert care to approximately 12 patients and their families.

The unit offers 12 private rooms, a therapeutic whirpool bath, a family room with kitchenette, and space for family members to sleep.  Volunteers provide each room with freshly cut flowers and coordinate a twice weekly cake and tea service with live music as well as a weekly wine and cheese service.  In addition, the Art for Healing Foundation has donated beautiful art work to create a healing space for all.

Bereavement support services are offered to family members following the death of a loved one.  Memorial services for friends, family, and staff are held monthly.

Palliative Care Day Hospital

The Palliative Care Day Hospital team (physicians, nurses, a nutritionist, and a social worker) provides an out-patient service that assesses patients' physical, psychological and social needs; facilitates tests and interventions; and offers excellent symptom management and end-of-life care planning.

The team works collaboratively with patients' CLSCs to ensure that the required services are in place to allow patients to remain at home as long as possible.

Palliative Care Consult Service

A team of nurse clinicians and physicians provides this in-hospital service to all MUHC patients not admitted to the palliative care unit. The role of the consult team is to provide holistic patient and family assessment and to suggest care options for improved symptom control and quality of life. The consult team works especially closely with care teams at both the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute.

Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) Neuro-palliative care service

In close collaboration with Palliative Care McGill, the MNI is developing a neuro-palliative care service, the first of its kind in North America. The MNI has long been caring for patients with life-limiting neurological disorders.

Service Access

Referrals to all MUHC palliative care services are made through the patient's treating physician.
