FAQ
What commitment is needed by an instructor wishing to supervise a project?
Similar to running any undergraduate project, supervisors are expected to meet regularly with their FSCI 396 student to discuss project development and support them in data collection and analysis, as well as preparation and assessment of research reports and presentations.
Specifically, instructors must commit to the following:
- A meeting with the Office of Science Education to discuss support for the approved project.
- Provide to their student a brief project description and three starter readings.
- Weekly meetings with their student to discuss project development, data collection and analysis.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on their student’s research proposal, research performance, final presentation, and research report draft.
- Timely evaluation (grading) of their student’s final presentation, research report and overall research performance as per the provided FSCI 396 rubrics.
- If possible, attend the FSCI 396 Stream B end-of-term presentation symposium.
What support is there for instructors who wish to propose and supervise a project?
- For questions related to the application process, or to request a consultation to discuss the design of a teaching and learning research project, please contact ose [at] mcgill.ca.
- Instructors of approved projects may directly contact the FSCI 396 coordinators to discuss support with specific questions.
What support is there for students participating in an independent research project?
Stream B students are invited to optionally attend Stream A workshops during the term that focus on science education research topics (e.g., qualitative data analysis). Workshop dates will be made available to students at the start of term.
