About the Office of Social Accountability in Nursing (OSAN)
Established in 2023, McGill University’s Office of Social Accountability in Nursing (OSAN) is committed to advancing equity within nursing education. OSAN achieves this by advising on transformative curricula, fostering meaningful and reciprocal community partnerships, and promoting inclusive, socially responsive learning environments.
Building on the impactful work of the previous Global and Indigenous Health in Nursing (GAIHN) initiatives at the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN), the Office of Social Accountability in Nursing (OSAN) continues to advance global, planetary, and Indigenous health. OSAN’s expanded mandate also includes a strong commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression across nursing education, research, and practice.
This work aligns with the strategic priorities of McGill University, including the Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism and McGill’s 52 Calls to Action. These institutional commitments are also reflected in the Ingram School of Nursing’s Strategic Plan (2022–2027), which intentionally embeds equity, anti-racism, and social accountability across all aspects of the school’s mission.
Further, OSAN’s work is grounded in national nursing standards, including the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) frameworks and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics—specifically Domain 4: Value 4 – Pursuing Truth and Reconciliation and Domain 5: Value 5 – Promoting Social Justice.
A unique and vital feature of OSAN is its leadership structure: the Director holds a seat on the Ingram Operations Committee. This deliberate and strategic inclusion ensures that these priorities and commitments are not siloed, but meaningfully embedded within the school’s leadership, operations, and decision-making processes.
OSAN Vision and Mandate
We envision nursing education and practice that recognizes and addresses the impacts of historical/current injustices and systemic inequalities in health and social outcomes. Through collective action and accountability, we aim to equip current and future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to understand and address systemic barriers to advance health equity in nursing education, research, and practice.
Directors Message
Welcome to the Office of Social Accountability in Nursing (OSAN) at the Ingram School of Nursing.
As Inaugural Director of OSAN, it is my privilege to lead this important work at a time when the call for equity, justice, and accountability in healthcare and education has never been more urgent. Established in 2023, OSAN was created to respond meaningfully to these calls—by addressing systemic inequities in nursing education, supporting community-led partnerships, and advancing anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices across the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN). This work is carried out in alignment with the ISoN Strategic Plan (2022–2027), which embeds equity and social accountability as core priorities across all facets of the School’s mission.
Our work is grounded in the belief that socially accountable nursing is not a theoretical ideal—it is a daily commitment to action. Our efforts are guided by ARC values of Action, Accountability, Relationships, Responsibility, Collaboration, and Community.
At OSAN, we recognize that transformative change happens through relationships. Whether working with students, faculty, staff, or community partners, we are building a foundation for lasting impact—one that reimagines what nursing education can and should be: inclusive, culturally responsive, and equitable for all learners and communities.
OSAN is a space for all students, faculty, staff, and partners to engage with, learn from, and contribute to. Whether through dialogue, collaboration, or shared action, we invite the entire ISoN and McGill community to be part of this ongoing work.

OSAN Operating Committee
The OSAN Operating Committee is composed of dedicated Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN) faculty and staff who play a key role in advancing the mission and initiatives of the office. Reporting directly to the OSAN Director, committee members contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of key OSAN initiatives, supporting socially accountable nursing education, research, and practice. In their roles, committee members actively engage with ISoN faculty, staff, and students, as well as McGill colleagues beyond the School of Nursing, and community members and partners who are external to the university.
