Published: 31 March 2006

Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada will deliver the inaugural Phyllis Shapiro Memorial Lecture, "Teaching Justice," on Monday, April 3, Mount Royal Centre, 2200 Mansfield St., Montreal, at 5:30 pm.

Established to honour the memory of Dr. Phyllis Shapiro, this annual lecture series will highlight topics in the subject of education. The late wife of former McGill Principal Dr. Bernard Shapiro, Dr. Shapiro taught at the McGill Faculty of Education in the Department of Administration and Policy Studies, specializing in elementary school curriculum.

Justice Abella, a longtime friend of Phyllis Shapiro, shared her passion for education. She has been a champion of Canadian judicial education, organizing the first judicial seminar in which judiciary at every level took part and the first judicial seminar to include persons outside the legal profession. One of Canada's foremost experts in human rights law, Justice Abella has also chaired the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the Ontario Law Reform Commission. She was the Boulton Visiting Professor at the McGill Faculty of Law for several years.

This lecture is funded through gifts made to the McGill Faculty of Education in memory of Phyllis Shapiro, in conjunction with McGill Development, Alumni and University Relations.
