Three of the six Killam Research Fellows also teach at McGill
What does a novel communicate about the world of its inhabitants? What can it teach us about our relation to the world that other forms of thought do not teach us? Prof. Isabelle Daunais, of McGill’s Département de langue et littérature françaises and Canada Research Chair in the Esthetics and Art of the Novel, engaged with these questions to critical acclaim in her 2015 book, Le roman sans aventure (Les Éditions du Boréal), and they continue to inform her research today.
The strength and resonance of her scholarship are being honoured on May 3, 2016, when she will be awarded the Canada Council’s Killam Prize for the Humanities at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The Killam Prize remains one of Canada’s most prestigious awards, worth $100,000 and given annually to five researchers in the respective fields of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, and engineering.
When Prof. Daunais’ 2015 book was published, she expected some controversy. Central to its argument is an assertion that Quebec novels published between the end of the 19th century and the 1980s never found an audience outside Quebec because they contain, in essence, no challenges to the characters’ ideas about the world. “I saw a thread through all these works of Quebecois literature,” says Daunais. “They lack adventure – or a transformation of a character because his world is transforming.”
Traditionally, a novel deals with a character’s transformation, brought about by changes in his or her social world. Daunais argues that it was the very character of Quebecois culture that informed the Quebecois “novel without adventure.”
“Quebec has not been confronted with wars. There has been a kind of isolation that has protected Quebec from history with a big H, and from any dramatic or unforeseen transformation,” she says.
Daunais’ research for Le roman sans aventure deals only with novels published through the early 1990s. If she were to write a sequel about the contemporary Quebec novel, she believes she would be dealing with a different Quebec. “A lot has changed in Quebec since the early 90s,” she says.
Lately, Prof. Daunais has been on sabbatical, researching how the novel works as a tool for memory. “The novel isn’t about what’s new,” she says. “Often it is about what has disappeared. It is a tool that our culture has created to understand the world. I am interested in what the novel is saying in what the novel is saying about what we let go of the past, and what we try to retain from it,” she says. Her new project approaches the history of memory through the novel. “What does the novel tell us about how we remember things?” she asks. “Old ways of being, old ways of acting, that are still active in our minds, but have vanished.”
Prof. Daunais’ history at McGill far precedes 2004, when she arrived here as a professor. She completed her undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degrees here, spending a year on an exchange at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. After teaching at Université Laval, she returned to McGill. Over the years, she has built an international reputation as a scholar of 19th century French literature, particularly Flaubert and realism.
On the honour of receiving the Killam Prize, she says, ““It’s a huge encouragement to keep focused on what I’m doing, and I want to thank my research team and all my students for being such an important part of it.”
The Canada Council also announced its Killam Research Fellowships, which recognizes scholars engaged in ongoing projects of outstanding merit. McGill is home to three of the six fellows. They are:
