Education has often asked of the arts, what does it do to help student learning beyond teaching the arts themselves? Questions of what “the arts” entails also enlist curiosity and complexity when one considers what has come to be known as the “Arts,” e.g. classical music, ballet, fine visual arts, and whom might be included or excluded in the arts in education as a result. Lipset and Ledo discuss the role of teaching artists as culturally sustaining pedagogues in classrooms, third spaces, and schools that seek to bring the arts across the entirety of a school curriculum. They will share learnings from their work at the intersection of media arts and education, school transformation, queer theory and beyond.

About the speakers

Dr. Lipset's research centers on the intersections of critical arts pedagogies, education change, pushout re-engagement, teacher preparation, and social justice, with expertise in critical digital and media literacy, culturally sustaining school change, and arts in education.

Ledo’s work centers on curriculum development, queering curriculum, community building amongst educators, and facilitating through the arts with a focus on how to best support marginalized youth. Ledo is currently a PhD Student and her current SSHRC-funded research explores the transformative power of Queer Teaching Artists and their contribution to aiding schools to becoming Human Rights leaders.
