Hanukkah 2021 begins in the evening of November 28th! We asked Casandra, the president of JQueer, how they are celebrating during this holiday season.
"Hanukkah is a minor Holiday in Judaism, commemorating the Maccabee's victory and the rededication of the temple. A miracle occurred at the time where, with only one day's worth of oil, they were able to light the menorah for 8 days.
For many, Hanukkah is a yearly reminder of Jewish persistence through persecution as well as a reminder of an important Jewish victory. On every night of Hanukkah, you would add a new candle to the menorah. As it is placed on the highest point of the room, the eight candles really light up the entire space.
This year, I am celebrating Hanukkah with my roommates and various Jewish organizations throughout the island. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights as we light up candles to remember the miracle of the oil. As it is usually around the Winter Solstice, I find a lot fo meaning from the idea that the brightest time of the year coincides with the darkest time of the year."
