SharePoint "Alert me" is going away
Microsoft is currently retiring SharePoint's “alert me”, which will disappear from McGill’s SharePoint sometime between January and July 2026. McGill has no control over the exact moment when the feature will be removed within that timeframe.
SharePoint alerts notify users about changes to a SharePoint document library (e.g., new folder created, new files added or deleted, etc.).
To know if such alerts are active on a document library, refer to the first item in this article.
IMPORTANT: If you depend on these alerts for business-critical notifications in your workflows, you must discontinue their use as soon as possible and start using other available solutions.
What to use instead of SharePoint alerts
You can create SharePoint rules that will notify users when items are added to or changed in a list or library. Follow these instructions to replace your current SharePoint alerts with SharePoint rules.
You can also use Power Automate instead. Power Automate is included in all staff’s Microsoft 365 licenses. It requires specialized knowledge to be used. Please consult this article for more information.
