Degree completion dates below are assumptions. These guidelines are provided in advance of Banting's official launch of the 2024-2025 Postdoctoral Fellowship program. These guidelines (including dates and eligibility criteria) are subject to change once the official launch is open.


The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best Canadian and international postdoctoral applicants, who will positively contribute to Canada's economic, social and research‑based growth. The objectives of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program are to:

  • attract and retain top-tier Canadian and international postdoctoral talent,
  • develop their leadership potential, and
  • position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

Banting fellowships are valued at $70K/year (taxable) for two years and just seventy new fellowships are awarded annually. These fellowships are distributed equally across Canada's three federal granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Criteria for selecting candidates:

  1. Applicant’s research excellence and leadership in the research domain:
    • demonstrated capacity for research excellence, and
    • demonstrated capacity for leadership in the research domain
  2. Quality of applicant's proposed research program:
    • potential of the proposed research program, executed in the proposed institutional environment, to position the applicant to have significant impact through a research-intensive career.
  3. Institutional commitment and demonstrated synergy between applicant and institutional strategic priorities:
    • demonstrated commitment of the institution to champion the development of the applicant's research and leadership capacity through support and professional development;
    • institution’s demonstrated research capacity in the research area of the applicant’s proposed research program; and
    • demonstrated alignment and synergy between the applicant's research ambitions and the institution's potential to benefit strategically from engaging with the applicant
