Talk: Mathematics and Machines: Navigating New Frontiers
Abstract: Over the past 50 years, computing power has undergone tremendous growth. However, understanding physical phenomena, such as climate change or fluid dynamics, and their mathematical formulation remains a long-standing challenge in mathematical and computational sciences. In recent years, with the development of new hardware and software, a new paradigm has emerged in physics and engineering through machine learning, and we are beginning to see machines being employed in increasingly creative ways in our work. In this talk, I will explore how traditional and computational mathematics can intersect and how computers may play a transformative role in mathematics in the coming years. I will also discuss and speculate on exciting future directions. No prior background is assumed.
