Introduction

Aviation has revolutionised the way that world travels and connects. It is due to aviation that billions of passengers and tonnes of valuable cargo can seamlessly travel to any corner of the globe. Civil aviation has been a great facilitator of world trade, tourism, and cross-border dialogue and cooperation, and contributed greatly to humanity’s progress and prosperity.

No international institution has contributed more to setting and enhancing standards for aviation safety and security than the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Since the entry into force of the 1944 Chicago Convention on 4 April 1947, and the first ICAO Assembly meeting convened in Montreal on 6 May 1947, ICAO continues to play an essential role as the heart of global aviation governance.

Through ICAO, States have been able to successfully accommodate technological changes, address threats to aviation, and embrace novel applications and emerging modes of aerial transportation. ICAO’s enduring success and achievements over the past 75 years deserves to be highlighted and celebrated.

The Permanent Mission of Republic of Korea (ROK) to ICAO, in collaboration with the Institute of Air and Space Law of McGill University, is delighted to organise this highly-anticipated conference which marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of ICAO, as well as the 70th anniversary of the ROK’s accession to ICAO.

Under the theme “Connecting the World: ICAO’s Legacy of 75 Years and the Future of Aviation”, ICAO representatives, subject-matter experts and academics will be discussing how ICAO has for over seven decades ensured the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation, and what challenges and opportunities await aviation in the future.
