FMER-PRAM Crossroad Panel Discussions: Shared Decision-Making in Family Medicine Education and Practice

Four panelists will make presentations of their perspectives about Shared Decision Making in Family Medicine education and practice, grounded in their experience and expertise as clinicians, educators and researchers. They will comment on the preliminary findings of an ongoing realist review of the impact of shared decision-making in family medicine practice.   

Family Physician and Patient Perspectives 
Dr. Laura Maclaren, clinical director of the McGill PBRN and practicing family physician, and a patient partner will share their experiences of Shared Decision-Making in practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, I should be able to: 

  • Describe the art of shared decision-making in Family Medicine. 
  • Identify current challenges to adopting shared decision-making in the practice of Family Medicine. 
  • Explain the contribution of Participation Science to the improvement of shared decision-making in the practice of Family Medicine. 
  • Explore the implications of Participation Science for training new family doctors in shared decision-making.
