Graduate students in the Department of Biology should ensure that they are familiar with the safety protocols necessary for laboratory work. Several Safety Training courses are available through McGill's Environmental Health and Safety office.
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Training is mandatory for all students working in wet labs.
Newly admitted graduate students may need to complete additional Health and Safety training courses depending on the expected nature of their research.
- Our department encourages students who are required to handle and/or store bio-hazardous materials or blood-borne pathogens to attend the Introduction to Biosafety Training.
- Students who will be working with or in an area where radioisotopes are present should register for the Principles of Laboratory Radiation Safety Training.
- Students who are required to handle, store and dispose hazardous waste may wish to take the Hazardous Waste Management & Disposal Training for Laboratory Personnel.
