McGill alumni elected to the College of Fellows of the RAIC

Numerous McGill alumni have been elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and will be inducted into the College at the RAIC/OAA Festival in Ottawa on May 24-27, 2017.

Prof. Robert Mellin elected President of RCA

Prof. Robert Mellin has been elected President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The RCA is an honorary organization of established professional artists and designers from all regions of Canada. Members practice in more than thirty visual arts disciplines including but not limited to painting, print-making, architecture, sculpture, design, photography, ceramics, film, video, and digital art.

Annmarie Adams wins RAIC President’s Medal for Media in Architecture

Prof. Annmarie Adams and John Bentley Mays are the recipients of the 2017 President’s Medal for Media in Architecture given by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC.)  From the RAIC press release (see attachment):

This award recognizes storytelling about buildings and cities that promotes understanding of architecture and the role of architects in the daily lives of Canadians.

Mary Lanni-Campoli wins Dean of Students Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising

Three McGill students win awards in ASAI competition

Three of eleven winners in the student category of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) Architecture in Perspective 32 (2017) competition are professional Master’s students at McGill: Lorenzo Saroli-Palumbo (Gilbert Gorski Juror Award), Simon McKenzie (Corey Harper Juror Award), and Sarah Ives (Award of Merit).

Robert Mellin wins Built Heritage Award

On February 20, 2016, Prof. Robert Mellin received a Built Heritage Award from the City of St. John’s, Newfoundland, for the renovation of 38 Hayward Avenue. The low-pitch biscuit box roof shape of the existing house was retained, and a new bedroom was constructed above an existing detached garage. A second-storey insulated link or bridge connects the new bedroom to the second floor hallway of the house.

Ewa Bieniecka inducted as RAIC 2017 President

Ewa Bieniecka, FRAIC (B.Sc.[Arch.] '80, B.Arch. '82, M.Arch. '04), a Montreal architect specializing in conservation and restoration of heritage buildings, was inducted as the 78th President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) at a formal ceremony on Monday. About 90 guests attended the investiture ceremony at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.

McGill student teams win two prizes at Ice Hotel

McGill student teams won two of three prizes in the Architecture Éphémère competition at the Ice Hotel outside Quebec City in Valcartier at the opening celebration on Friday, January 20.  The team of U1 students Jessica Cheng and Biying Wang won second prize for their room Rêve Étoilé, while the team of U3 students Mia Chen, Jo-Yu Tseng, and Zhong Ji Cai

Two teams of undergraduate students from the School are amongst the three finalist teams in the Architecture Éphémère competition at the Ice Hotel outside Quebec City: a U1 team composed of Jessica Cheng and Biying Wang (Rêve Étoilé) and a U3 team composed of Mia Chen, Jo-Yu Tseng, and Zhong Ji Cai (Cocoa Flurry).

Prof. Robert Mellin wins Southcott Award

On November 17, 2016, Prof. Robert Mellin won a Southcott Award recognizing “design in context” for his new Middle Arm, Newfoundland residential project, “The Ballyhack Treehouse.” The design for this project incorporates both modern and traditional elements in a tall house with a small footprint, with the intent of preserving as many of the existing trees as possible on its Conception Bay waterfront site.
