The Montreal Media Policy Group

The Montreal Media Policy Group will meet on Tuesday, 13 February 2007 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Invited guests include Mr. Aimé-Jules Bizimana, doctoral candidate in the Joint Doctoral Program in Communication, Université du Québec à Montréal and Mr. Damien Charrieras from Université de Montréal. Mr. Bizimana will address the history of war journalism and media-military relations, with a special emphasis on the Iraq War. Mr. Charrieras specializes in multi-media industries and will speak about the Montreal video game industry in particular. If time permits, the group may also address the challenges facing Canadian policy presented by the recent CanWest purchase bid for Alliance-Atlantis.

The Montreal Media Policy Group is a collective of academics, legal and industry representatives who meet regularly to discuss significant issues related to media governance.

The meetings follow an informal discussion style on a predetermined topic with a rotating chair. Past meetings have included a public discussion with Canadian broadcasting icon Mr. Pierre Juneau, PC, OC in conversation with McGill University’s Beaverbrook Chair in Ethics, Media and Communications, Dr. Marc Raboy. In addition, members of this group launched a conference in Fall 2006 entitled Converging In Parallel: Linking Communication Research and Policy in Emerging Canadian Scholarship.

The group is also planning to meet on 13 March 2007 on the topic of community and alternative media.

The Montreal Media Policy Group is open to all interested parties in the Montreal area. However, due to limited seating capacity, organizers ask that you please notify them if you wish to attend.
