Tenure is granted to professors and librarians in recognition of excellent performance – and is the University’s strongest guarantee of academic freedom in research, teaching, and service. The year-long application process is a rigorous evaluation of performance.
At its May 16, 2016, meeting, McGill’s Board of Governors granted tenure to the 50 people in the 2015-2016 tenure cohort.
FAEQ awards $30,000 in bursaries to incoming McGill student-athletes
Six incoming freshmen to McGill have been pegged to share $30,000 and are among the 35 recipients of recruitment bursaries totalling $165,000, announced last week by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence. The amount includes five awards of $3,000 apiece, distributed to Canadians from outside Quebec who have chosen to pursue their educational and athletic careers in a Quebec university.

Professor Lee and her research team interviewed 100 executives and managers who had recently retired or were actively considering it and HR professionals from 24 companies to explore the different paths taken to retirement today.
Bookstore changes name, moves to new locations
McGill’s bookstore is changing names and changing places.
Now to be called Bookstore/Librairie Le James, the retail facility that supplies books, study materials and McGill-branded merchandise will soon set up shop in two locations: an academic-oriented store 3544 avenue du Parc, across the street from New Residence Hall, and a lifestyle-oriented shop at 680 Sherbrooke St., adjacent to the entrance of 688 Sherbrooke, in premises that used to house a copying store.

MBA News: Rising tuition, rising demand
In 2010, McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management did something extraordinary. It more than tripled the cost to attend its MBA program. The idea behind it was to make the program more self-sufficient and to rely less on money from the government of the province of Quebec. This year, the Montreal-based school will see a record number of applications, up 15% from last year.
HEC Paris dean Peter Todd on his plans for the business school
When Peter Todd accepted the role of dean at HEC Paris, he was aware that he would have a difficult and unusual act to follow.
The 57-year-old Canadian, the first non-French head at HEC, took over in September last year from Bernard Ramanantsoa, who had ample time to shape a powerful legacy at the business school. Prof Ramanantsoa had been in the job for 20 years before retiring last summer, a lengthy tenure even for a business school dean.
Top 10 countries for university education
With three universities in the top 50 world rankings, Canada makes it into the top five countries for higher education, according to QS. McGill University ranks in 24th, while the University of Toronto features in 34th and the University of British Columbia scrapes into the top 50. Canada can often prove a cheaper alternative to US study and involves a simpler application process.

‘Reinvent things and push the boundaries’: Patrick Pichette, Google advisor and former CFO
Patrick Pichette, 53, is an adviser to Google Inc. and on the board of Bombardier Inc., and of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, a non-partisan charity. Arctic Art has Changed, Gallery Owners say
Mark London grew up in the Elca London Gallery, of which he has been director for the past 25 years.
“The gallery and I were conceived at the same time,” says London, son of Jonas London, an office manager and McGill University commerce graduate, and Elca London, who held a master’s degree in psychology from McGill and worked at psychiatric hospitals. His mother’s means of earning a living was about to take a creative turn when Mark was in utero.
Dean’s Q&A: Peter Todd, HEC Paris
When Peter Todd joined the administration of HEC Paris last July, he made history as the first non-French dean of the top-ranked school. This past January, he helped the business school make history again when, as a result of a new French law, it became the first school in France to take on the new status of a consular higher education institution (or EESC) in the country, giving the school its first true whiff of independence in its more than 130-year history.
