Summary: If you choose to create a custom website you're accepting responsibility for compliance with Quebec laws, such as requirements for web security and accessibility.
How to avoid the costs and responsibilities of custom sites
For most web projects, McGill's WMS is a great platform choice. It's free, easy to use and comes with access to a robust support system.
The WMS makes it easy to ensure sites are secure, accessible, and aligned with McGill's Digital Standards.
But the WMS isn't suitable for all web projects. If your project requires features or functionality that aren't possible in the WMS, you may need to consider building a custom website.
Custom site requirements
Custom sites' flexibility comes with additional complexity, particularly if you're using the McGill brand. We think you should pay particular attention to the following requirements, which have grown more stringent over time.
Web security
Custom sites must align with legal and institutional requirements for web security. Keeping your website secure will protect you, your department and your site visitors. Your responsibilities include, using secure data transmission, monitoring for and responding to security threats and conducting regular security testing. For further details read our, Essential web security guidelines for site owners.
Accessibility
As outlined in Quebec's Standard sur l’accessibilité des sites Web (SGQRI 008 3.0), McGill websites and web platforms are expected to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Requirements include compatibility with assistive technology, accessible keyboard navigation, and specific methods for allowing user feedback and providing support. For full details view our, Accessibility checklist for custom or vendor-built websites.
Mandatory training
Owners of custom, public-facing websites are required to complete the following Web Services training courses:
- Writing for the web at McGill - WS-100
- McGill's digital standards - WS-101
- Designing great digital experiences - WS-102
- UX at McGill - WS-103 (required if user research will be conducted)
- Web accessibility - WS-106
External designers or developers working on public-facing, custom websites must complete the training course, McGill's digital standards - WS-101. Externals should also contact the McGill DS team to understand the branding and resources applicable to their platform.
For full details about mandatory training requirements, including course dates and how to register for courses, visit the Training and events page.
Additional requirements
Additional responsibilities associated with custom sites are outlined in our, Custom or vendor-built project toolkit.
The toolkit includes:
- A summary of the requirements that the site or application must meet.
- The responsibilities of the project sponsor and team.
- A directory of resources for each stage of the project.
