Career Planning

Planning a career in medicine - including choosing a specialty and applying for residency - is ultimately the student’s responsibility. However, many people can help make informed choices: Career Advisors, faculty members, peers, residents, and loved ones.

The Career Advisors at the Office of Medical Learner Affairs (OMLA) are here to support medical students in seeking out and interpreting meaningful experiences, understanding relevant information, and developing the career management skills they’ll need throughout medical school, residency, and future career transitions. To do this, they collaborate with internal and external partners to bring in the necessary expertise and ensure continuity of support throughout all four years.

Our Mandate

The OMLA Career Advising Service offers a structured and evolving approach to career planning by:

  • Providing information about career options aligned with the evolving needs of the Quebec and Canadian populations
  • Offering guidance on electives
  • Supporting students in preparing for their residency applications

Career Planning Meetings

Career planning meetings with OMLA Career Advisors are personalized, confidential, and empathetic. We work with you to create a specific action plan that will “advance the plot” in your career planning journey. We will answer your questions, discuss decisions you may have to make, and help to demystify the path forward.

There are many reasons to schedule an appointment - none too small or too big.

  • Maybe you are completely undecided about your path in medicine: that’s ok! Together, we’ll come up with a plan to help you explore your options.
  • Maybe you’re fully decided and want reassurance that you're covering all your bases: we can help with that too.
  • Or perhaps you’re somewhere in between or have an entirely different concern - we’re always happy to listen, support, and co-create a plan that makes sense to you.

At the end of your meeting, we hope you’ll feel less confused, more empowered, and ready to take concrete steps toward building your professional identity.
