Despite our prevention efforts, we understand that it is impossible to avoid risk altogether. Depending on the situation, you may submit a claim to obtain a replacement or compensation. The objective of insurance is to put you back in the same financial position that you were in before a loss.
It is important to bear in mind that maintenance issues and regular wear and tear are not covered by our insurance policies.
Loss and theft
What to do in the event of a loss or theft?
On University property:
- Call Security Services.
- Inform Risk Advisory and Insurance Services immediately of the incident via supportrisk.insurance [at] mcgill.ca (email).
Off University property:
- If insured, contact the local police and obtain a case number.
- Advise Risk Advisory and Insurance Services of all pertinent information, including the police report number.
Water and fire damage
As soon as water damage is found, the Facilities Call Centre and Security Services should be contacted to document the leak or flood, begin the cleanup and determine damage to the building, if any. If damages are extensive, we may call on the services of restoration specialists and an insurance adjuster.
In the case of both water and fire damage:
- Prepare a detailed list of any damaged items.
- Testing the integrity of the equipment should be performed by in-house technicians, where possible. Inform us if any items need to be sent to the manufacturer for testing.
- Provide written reports both when testing is performed in-house or by the manufacturer.
- Provide two estimates for any items that are deemed beyond repair. Upon receipt, we will notify you as soon as your estimates are approved.
Departmental or Unit accounts absorb all charges. Once the repair or replacement process is completed, copies of all invoices should be sent to us along with a completed Claim Document Summary Form, which we will provide to you via email. Banner print-outs are required to show the request for payment of the invoices and tax rebates.
Vehicle accident
In the event of a collision with another vehicle, the driver must fill out the joint accident report.
The following accidents must be reported to the police without exception:
- Accidents involving bodily injuries and death;
- Hit and run (police reports must be completed before the University-owned vehicle is moved);
- All accidents that occur outside the province of Quebec.
Accidents where fault has been assigned to McGill are subject to a $1,000 deductible. Two estimates for repairs are required before we can approve repairs.
Accidents where fault has not been assigned to McGill are paid by insurers and require an insurance adjuster's intervention. Negotiated prices are considered fixed costs in all cases.
Vehicles unsafe to drive or with broken windows or door locks can be towed or driven to a garage of the driver's choice.
