Map of Douglas Mental Health University Institute

The Douglas Institute is the only institution within the McGill Health Network entirely dedicated to mental health. The Douglas offers a broad range of specialized and ultra specialized mental health services, to people of all ages. The Douglas has a strong teaching mandate and offers teaching and training opportunities to students of all disciplines and training to other professionals and to community partners. Its close affiliation with the Douglas Research Centre also offers opportunities for knowledge transfer and clinical research integration.

Message from the Chief

Founded in 1881 by Alfred Perry, the Douglas has effectively transformed itself from an asylum to a progressive mental health institution. The Douglas joined McGill in 1946, created its world-renowned Research Centre in 1979, and became a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre in 1982. The Douglas’ leadership in mental health care delivery, research, and training was acknowledged when it was named a Mental Health Institute in 2006. The Douglas is dedicated to offering the best available treatments while seeking new treatments, to training the professionals of tomorrow, and to reaching out to the public in order to fight stigma.
