Ben Calman, PhD student in Educational Studies in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) and member of the Plurilingual Lab at McGill University, has been awarded the prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship. This national award recognizes outstanding doctoral research with the potential to advance knowledge and make meaningful social contributions.
With over a decade of experience in education and research, Ben has worked in classrooms and educational settings across the United States, Vietnam, Canada, and online. He completed his SSHRC-funded master’s degree in 2022 where his work explored the intersections of language, identity, and equity in educational contexts.
Currently pursuing his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Angelica Galante, Ben’s research focuses on linguistic discrimination and empowerment. His doctoral project seeks to understand how language hierarchies influence educational experiences and how educators and learners can be empowered through more inclusive linguistic practices.
Reflecting on the significance of the fellowship, Ben emphasized that the award will allow him to devote more time and energy to his doctoral research while continuing his teaching practice and spending time with his growing family.
Ben’s work is expected to make a valuable contribution to the field of language education and social justice, offering new insights into how linguistic diversity can be recognized and celebrated in educational systems worldwide.
Bravo, Ben, on this incredible milestone!
