These Ministry of Health funded positions are filled via CaRMS for the R-1 entry level in either Family Medicine or Specialty Programs, accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). These positions are funded by the MSSS and are reserved for Canadian citizens who are graduates from Canadian Medical Schools or U.S Medical Schools.
- Must hold Canadian citizenship/permanent resident of Canada status. Quebec medical graduates who require a student visa are eligible to apply for a position at McGill via this route only. In Quebec, we are unable to consider applications via the CaRMS R-1 Match from visa students who obtain their MD in a Canadian medical school outside of Quebec;
- Must hold a Medical doctorate from Canadian or US LCME accredited medical school/ faculty; must have been awarded by July 1st of the admission year. The Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) verifies the equivalence of all medical degrees issued by a Canadian medical school outside of Quebec and by all American medical schools. This is required in order for the CMQ to issue the resident training card, which is required in order to be able to train in Quebec hospitals and be paid by the Ministry of Health.
- Must not have undertaken previous postgraduate training in Canada or in the USA.
Graduates of a United States osteopathic school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation are also eligible under the above criteria.
An American medical graduate seeking postgraduate training in Québec who is an American Citizen and not a dual citizen (Canada/USA), must apply under the contingent particulier quota.
International Medical Graduates:
International Medical Graduates who have completed the Collège des médecins du Québec equivalence process and who have been deemed eligible for the R-1 match by the Bureau de collaboration inter-universitaire and who have not already completed any post-MD training in Québec, may apply via CaRMS, provided they complete the application process before the deadline and to submit the letter from la Conférence des vice-doyens aux études médicales postdoctorales des facultés de médecine du Québec (CVDFM) to confirm their status.

Upon being matched, trainees must apply On-Line to McGill and submit other registration documents.
