Our Mission, Vision and Values
Who We Are
We study how social structures, goals, and mindsets shape research and action on climate and sustainability in our schools, higher education institutions, and in non-formal learning settings. Inspired by the work of Donella Meadows we study the “leverage points” that can facilitate transitions toward more collaborative, transdisciplinary models of sustainability research and practice. Our members bring diverse perspectives, skills, and roles to a space rooted in peer support, mentorship, and empowerment. Grounding ourselves in a “pracademic” ethos—bridging academic inquiry with real-world practice—we prioritize participatory and co-creative approaches to addressing these global crises.
What We Do
Our lab functions as a vibrant convening space, where creativity is nurtured and supported. We connect sustainability champions from McGill’s Department of Integrated Studies in Education with learners, scholars and change-makers across McGill and beyond. Coming from diverse academic journeys, our members engage in mentorship, research collaboration, and activism, recognizing the unique contributions we each provide. We support personal development and achievements, while also emphasizing collective action on climate change and social transformation. Our members have extensive experience with non-academic collaborations through facilitation, trainings, evaluations, action research and more. In coming together, we continue to develop new tools and approaches that support learning and drive meaningful change.
What We Plan To Do: 2025-2030
Looking forward, we aim to expand our impact and recognition as a valued and trusted knowledge-holder on learning, leadership and sustainability transformations through research collaborations, transdisciplinary engagement, and strong community ties. We will grow our network through lab alumni connections, internship programs, and partnerships with organizations and universities in Canada and internationally. We are especially committed to strengthening our ties with youth-led and community-based climate and sustainability efforts. Ultimately, we seek to create a space that nurtures growth, encourages diverse perspectives, and bridges academic and community interests—creating a lasting impact on climate and sustainability education and leadership development.
Our Vision
To catalyze transformative climate action through collaborative, transdisciplinary research and practice that empowers diverse voices, addresses systemic challenges, and bridges academic and community efforts for a sustainable future.
Our Mission
To study the leverage points for meaningful climate action and meaningful change, examining how systems, goals, and mindsets shape impactful responses to the climate crisis. Through participatory, co-creative approaches, we create spaces for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation, equipping individuals and organizations to lead socially-just sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges.
Our Values
Guided by a transformative hope and purpose, our lab:
- Integrates whole-person engagement in our work, to cultivate reflective, self-aware, and purpose-driven individuals who think critically and act compassionately.
- Honors diverse perspectives and ways of knowing, embracing inclusive rigor that amplifies underrepresented voices.
- Fosters growth and enrichment through a supportive community environment for intellectual and personal development, emphasizing mutual aid and transparency to build trust and accountability in our collaborations.
