Master's student wins Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation Award

Award recognizes students whose keen interest in geriatrics is matched by care that focuses on respect for the dignity, autonomy and the lived experience of each individual.

Kudos to MSc(A)-N student Dayrom Mendez Acevedo, winner of this year’s Student Award presented by the Maimonides Geriatric Centre to a McGill University student currently enrolled in the Ingram School of Nursing’s undergraduate or master’s programs who demonstrates a keen interest in geriatrics.

Trained as a primary care physician in his native Cuba, where he developed a deep connection with the elderly, Dayrom volunteered at a CHSLD in Longueuil before returning to school to study nursing in McGill’s unique direct-entry master’s program. In his clinical placements at the Julius Richardson Rehabilitation Hospital and in geriatric psychiatry at the Douglas Mental Health Institute, Dayrom distinguished himself through his commitment to older adults and his thoughtful, strengths-based approach to care recognizing dignity, autonomy, lived experience, and the importance of family within the care experience.

Speaking on behalf of the ISoN at the Awards presentation held at Maimonides, Annie Chevrier, Associate Director, Graduate Education, Innovation and Accreditation, said, “We are gathered to recognize an exceptional student, but also to celebrate something very meaningful to us at the Ingram School of Nursing: our longstanding relationship with Maimonides and the shared values of compassion, dignity, commitment, and service that bring our two communities together.”
