National Post - MBA profitable for non-profits

Published: 30 November 2010

Many executives see an MBA as vital preparation for senior roles in the business world. Today, a growing number of MBA students are planning careers in non-profit and public organizations, and the value of the degree is just as great in that sector as in industry.

"The ultimate mission of a non-profit might be quite different from a private sector business," says Dr. Omar Toulan, associate dean at McGill's Desautels Faculty of Management. "But they share many aspects of effective management."

Dr. Toulan is involved with the McGill Not for Profit Consulting Program, now in its third year. An MBA team leader and three undergraduate students work in a traditional consulting structure, paired with a mentor from international management consultants Oliver Wyman. The team identifies a Montreal NGO for which they provide pro-bono consulting in the next semester.
