Montreal Gazette - Bass-Baritone, a McGill University student, wins big in competition

Published: 28 November 2011

Gordon Bintner, a 23-year-old bass-baritone studying at McGill, has won the Grand Prize of the OSM Standard Life Competition. The honor brings Saskatchewan-born Bintner – the only prizewinner not from Quebec or Ontario – one of three $10,000 first prizes as well an appearance in the OSM concert of Dec. 6 under guest conductor Arild Remmereit.

A student of Sanford Sylvan at the Schulich School of Music, Bintner won the grand prize on the strength of songs by Hugo Wolf and Jacques Ibert as well as arias by Mozart, Bellini and Handel, including The Trumpet Shall Sound from Messiah. His repertoire for the concert of Dec. 6 is not yet determined.
