The kids are all right: JGH Psychiatry Research Day focuses on supporting families and children

Event spotlights biological, psychological and cultural factors in treating children and their parents

Children and family take centre-stage at the Jewish General Hospital's Fifth Annual Psychiatry Research Day, to be held Friday, March 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Entitled Building Strong Foundations: The Role of Child Psychiatry Research in Support of Children and Families, the event is designed to update local health-care and social service professionals on the latest, cutting-edge developments in child psychiatry research at the JGH.

  • Dr. Michael Bond, Chief of the JGH Department of Psychiatry will present opening remarks.
  • Dr. Amir Raz, a renowned expert in the neuroscience of attention and hypnosis (and a former stage hypnotist) will talk about Training the Brain: Using Attention to Help Children Gain Control.
  • Dr. Cecile Rousseau, Director of the Transcultural Research and Intervention Team at the CSSS de la Montagne will discuss ways to help children heal from torture and other traumas in Healing Stories: School-Based Prevention Programs For Immigrant And Refugee Children.
  • Dr. Phyllis Zelkowitz, Director of Research at the JGH Department of Psychiatry, will describe the psychological impact of preterm birth on parents and children in Riding the Rollercoaster: How Parents Cope with the Birth of a Premature Infant
  • Dr. Jaswant Guzder, Director of Child Psychiatry at the JGH, will comment and moderate an open discussion.


"The Child Psychiatry Division of the JGH is a leader in providing culturally sensitive and evidence-based treatments for children and families," said Dr. Zelkowitz, the event organizer. "This year's Research Day highlights some of the important and innovative research being conducted in our department, with findings that have direct clinical relevance to professionals who work with children and families."
