For Feb.17, due to the storm, McGill teaching and work must be done remotely. Classes that cannot be done remotely will be cancelled. Labs and evaluations will be rescheduled, as appropriate. Only the McLennan Library is open for study (see hours). All other libraries are closed for the day.

Experts: Los Angeles wildfires

Published: 30 January 2025

More than 130,000 residents of the Los Angeles area are under evacuation orders or warnings  as fires, driven by high winds, continue to spread rapidly. At least five people have been killed, and thousands of homes have been destroyed.

McGill University experts are available to comment on this topic:

Christopher Barrington-Leigh, Associate Professor, Institute for Health and Social Policy, Bieler School of Environment, examines the empirical, experienced human benefits of economic and social conditions, changes, and policy. In a recent study, he found that neighbourhoods with the highest wildfire risk have the least connected streets.

John Gradek, Faculty Lecturer, School of Continuing Studies, can comment on the challenges of aerial firefighting in wildfire-prone environments, including the impact of wind and terrain, the expertise of flight crews, and the importance of using the right equipment, with insights into the role of Canadian aerial resources in combating urban wildfires like those in LA.

Scott Weichenthal, Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, identifies and evaluates environmental risk factors for chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Parisa Ariya, James McGill Professor, Departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Chemistry, is a world leader in the study of bioaerosol transmission, focusing on aerosols, gaseous and trace metal pollutants that affect the Earth's atmosphere and human health.
