Published: 21 June 2008

Charles Taylor, world-renowned McGill philosophy professor has won the Kyoto Prize, one of the world's biggest cash awards. Often referred to as the "Japanese Nobel," the prize is as glittery as it is prestigious: a 24-karat gold medal and 50 million yen ($470,770 Canadian). For Dr. Taylor, professor emeritus of philosophy at McGill, the award comes about a year after he won the prestigious $1.8-million Templeton Prize. His Kyoto Prize citation extols his construction of a philosophy that "actively pursues the harmonious co-existence of diverse cultures." Dr. Taylor has spent his academic lifetime exploring the meaning of human identity.
