International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia is May 17

An important day around the world for celebrating and advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), a day to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ people and ways their rights are violated and to advocate for change across the globe. It is also a time to celebrate the progress that has already been made. This day was chosen to remember May 17, 1990, the date the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Over 150 countries participate and you can find events at may17.org.

Montrealers will be celebrating IDAHOBIT with a Citizens’ March organized by Fondation Émergence and Fierté Montréal on May 17, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Place de Festivals. All are invited to join this effort to make queer identities visible, affirm their right to exist and live in safety, support LGBTQIA+ communities, show that allies are numerous, and say no to hate.
