Materials Research Day

Date: November 15, 2023 | Time: 8:30 – 4:30 PM | Free event
Location: New Residence Hall, 3625 Parc Avenue

Register by Friday, November 10

The McGill Institute for Advanced Materials (MIAM) and the Facility for Electron Microscopy Research (FEMR) invite you to Materials Research Day.

Join us for an interdisciplinary celebration of materials research at McGill and beyond. With 14 distinguished speakers, including Professor Antonio Facchetti (Georgia Tech), this event offers insights into the multifaceted realm of materials research, spanning topics such as biomedical detection, advanced microscopy, and characterization techniques.

You’ll also discover the innovative capabilities of McGill's facilities and the cutting-edge techniques driving progress in the field.

A poster session will be held for the final hour of the event. We invite attendees to prepare research posters, offering an excellent platform for sharing research findings, exchanging techniques, and exploring potential collaborations.

Antonio Facchetti
Plenary speaker:  Antonio Facchetti, Georgia Tech

Antonio Facchetti is a Hightower Chair in MSE at the Georgia Institute of Technology, co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Flexterra Corporation, an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University, and a Guest Professor at Linkoping University. He has published more than 560 research articles, 15 book chapters, and holds more than 120 patents. He received the ACS Award for Creative Invention, the Giulio Natta Gold Medal of the Italian Chemical Society, the team IDTechEx Printed Electronics Europe Award, the corporate Flextech Award.

Ashlee Howarth, Concordia UniversityKeynote speaker: Ashlee J. Howarth

Ashlee J. Howarth is an Associate Professor and Research Chair at Concordia University in Montréal. She was born and raised in London, Ontario. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Western Ontario in 2009, and then went on to do her PhD in inorganic materials chemistry at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Michael O. Wolf. Before joining the faculty at Concordia, she completed an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University with Joseph T. Hupp and Omar K. Farha. At Concordia, the Howarth group is focused on the design and synthesis of rare-earth cluster-based metal–organic frameworks targeting applications in pollution remediation, catalysis, drug delivery, X-ray detection, and chemical sensing.

Keynote speaker: Marc-André Fortin

Profile photo of Marc Andre FortinProfessor Marc-André Fortin, head of the Biomaterials for In Vivo Imaging Laboratory at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec (CR-CHU de Québec - Université Laval), is an expert in nano(bio)materials for in vivo imaging. He earned his doctorate at INRS-Énergie et Matériaux, followed by a postdoctoral position in biomedical imaging in Sweden. His research focuses on the development of nano(bio)materials for imaging, strategies for in vivo biodistribution imaging, additive manufacturing of biomedical polymers for enhanced visibility in biomedical imaging, and the synthesis of radioactive nanoparticles. He has published numerous articles and holds patents in plasma technologies.
