Foreign Clerkships at the Supreme Court of Israel 2022-2023 - Call for candidates

McGill’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) is currently accepting applications for a minimum 3-month clerkship at the Supreme Court of Israel in 2022-2023.

Clerks are assigned to assist one judge with tasks such as drafting legal and administrative documents, preparing case files, and researching legal issues.

Eligibility

General requirements

Current McGill BCL/LLB, LLM or DCL students graduating in June 2022, and recent McGill graduates from Fall 2019 onward may apply for these positions.

Criteria

Any student wishing to apply to the Foreign Clerkship Program at the Supreme Court of Israel must do so directly on the Court’s website.

Foreign law clerks conduct their assignments in English. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required (although it is helpful). Knowledge of other languages is also an advantage.

Candidates will be selected based on:

• Demonstrated writing and research skills;
• Training in and familiarity with international law and relevant courses pertaining to the Court;
• An excellent academic record; and
• Proficiency in the Court’s official languages: English and Hebrew.

Application Process

Candidates should apply for the clerkship directly with the Court. For more information, visit the Court’s website about staffing and Foreign Clerkships at the Supreme Court of Israel.

Candidates should submit the following documentation:

• Cover letter clearly indicating the period(s) during which the applicant would like to clerk at the Court;
• Curriculum vitae;

• Law school transcript;

• At least two letters of recommendation, preferably one from a law professor; and

• Short sample of their legal writing.

All application materials (including recommendation letters) must be submitted in a single attachment in an email sent to jobs [at] court.gov.il. The subject line of the email should state: "Foreign Law Clerk Application - [Full name of the applicant]."

Applications may be sent during four periods every year:

• 15 February – 15 March
• 15 May – 15 June
• 15 August – 15 September
• 15 November – 15 December

Applications will be reviewed and processed within 45 days of the final day of each application period. As part of the selection process, candidates may be contacted by individual chambers for a phone or Skype interview. Successful candidates will be contacted in writing by a specific chamber with an offer. At the end of the selection procedure, all applicants will be notified of their status.

We recommend that applications be sent at least five (5) months prior to the period(s) you wish to clerk at the Court.

Successful candidates may need to provide further information and documentation to the Court, and acceptance to the position is subject to security clearance and to the receipt of the appropriate permit (visa) from the Israeli Ministry of Interior.

Morris Fish Award

The Hon. Morris J. Fish Clerkship Award enables one current McGill BCL/JD student, or recent graduate, each year to partially fund their clerkship at the Supreme Court of Israel. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

To apply for the Hon. Morris J. Fish Clerkship award, candidates should submit the following items on myFuture:

• A clerkship acceptance letter from the Supreme Court of Israel;
• A updated curriculum vitae;
• The names of two referees, at least one of whom must be a McGill Law professor);
• A recent law transcript; and
• A short cover letter addressed to Professor Nandini Ramanujam.

Successful candidates must also commit to providing a final report on their experience at the end of the clerkship. Selection for the award will be based on academic achievement.

The successful applicant will receive an award of $5,000 to assist with travel and living expenses related to the clerkship.
