Organised in collaboration with the Sciences Po Law School, ‘Eating Popcorn like a Lawyer’ is a seminar series that seeks to establish a continuous dialogue between the fields of law and film. For each instalment we invite a prominent legal scholar to select, discuss and analyse a thought-provoking film.

For the first session of this term’s series we have invited Nathan Moore (senior lecturer in law, Birkbeck University London) to discuss, analyse and theorise Leos Carax’s masterpiece Holy Motors through a prism of law and technology.

The film follows the life of Monsieur Oscar, who travels from one appointment to the next performing a succession of roles: successful businessman, murderer, beggar, monstrous creature, father of a family etc. While he emerges himself in each performance, the cameras are conspicuously missing. We follow him, disorientated, as he oscillates between spaces of motor and action, unsure of where reality and fantasy part.

Participants are asked to watch the film beforehand. Information on how to do so will be provided by email after registering.
