CANCELLED - The Accidental Legal Activist: How I used the courts to seek Justice

Wednesday, April 1, 2020 17:30to19:00
Chancellor Day Hall 3644 rue Peel, Montreal, QC, H3A 1W9, CA

We regret to announce that this conference has been cancelled.

The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism is proud to welcome Michelle Douglas, a Canadian LGBTQ2 rights activist and civil servant, for the Inaugural Michelle Douglas Lecture.

Michelle Douglas had a promising career in the Canadian Armed Forces, but was nevertheless fired by the military in 1989 for being a lesbian. She launched a landmark lawsuit against the military that resulted in the ending of its discriminatory policy against gays and lesbians. Douglas has gone on to a lifetime of activism in pursuit of LGBTQ2 equality; she has recently retired from the Department of Justice after a 30-year career.

About the Michelle Douglas Lectureship

The Michelle Douglas Lectureship allows the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism to actively engage in public education and community outreach on issues of sexuality, gender expression and gender identity, justice and the law, and to advance justice for LGBTQ2 communities.

The Lectureship is connected to the Martine Roy Student Colloquium, which gives outstanding law students an opportunity to participate in a learning forum, where they can gain valuable knowledge fo gender and LGBTQ2 legal issues through collaboration with peers and mentors, while presenting their work for feedback and dialogue. (See the Call for papers for the first Martine Roy Colloquium)
