Sun-Young Kim

Sun-Young Kim earned her Honours B.A. and M.A. in Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto and her Ph.D. in German Studies at the University of Michigan. Before joining McGill University, she taught German language, literature, and culture courses at universities in Ontario and Michigan. In the field of literary studies, her teaching and research interests include literature of the 19th-21st centuries, with a special emphasis on Viennese modernism, Weimar modernism, and the use of religious symbols and language in literature.

Her teaching and research interests in the field of language pedagogy include fostering student engagement through student-centered approaches, such as incorporating self-reflection into participation assessment, and integrating technology into the foreign language classroom. In addition, Sun-Young has been an active member of the AI working groups, including the Committee for Languages, Academic Integrity, and Artificial Intelligence (CLAI) at McGill, which concentrates on academic integrity as well as the critical and responsible use of generative AI tools in teaching and learning. As Language Program Director in German Studies, she is committed to training and supporting graduate student and early-career instructors in their roles as language educators. She collaborates with language pedagogues across programs, institutions, and provincial partners on building a strong German language community in Quebec and Canada.
