I’m not sure reconciliation is possible at this point. Non-Indigenous people living in northern North America need to do more listening and remain open to being very uncomfortable. The Canadian state seized children with the expressed intent of assimilation and the elimination of Indigenous communities and culture. As an individual, I’m making an effort to read and listen to diverse Indigenous voices in scholarship, politics and culture and trying to recognize when I fall into the many legacies of colonial thinking.
