FAIIRK was established to provide a permanent academic home for Indigenous Studies at McGill University, following years of advocacy, community engagement, and institutional reflection.
The Faculty of Arts Institute for Indigenous Research and Knowledges (FAIIRK) is a stand alone academic unit within McGill University’s Faculty of Arts. The Institute provides a dedicated home for Indigenous Studies as a distinct academic discipline, supporting teaching, research, and community engaged scholarship grounded in Indigenous methodologies, pedagogies, and epistemologies.
FAIIRK brings together faculty, students, Indigenous communities, and Indigenous knowledge holders to advance Indigenous Studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the Indigenous Studies Minor and graduate pathways in Indigenous language research and revitalization.
The Institute is committed to supporting Indigenous students throughout their academic journeys by creating spaces for community, celebration, and recognition of academic achievement, as well as through opportunities such as the Rathlyn Fellowship.
FAIIRK also hosts public facing events that bring Indigenous knowledges, creativity, and research into conversation.
The Institute brings together teaching, research, and engagement grounded in language, land, and Indigenous governance.
